Start of New Module

I woke up and realized I hadn’t set my alarm.  Good thing I woke up with enough time, though, at 6:50ish.  I had showered last night so I was ready by 7:20 and headed downstairs for breakfast.  I had grilled cheese and slices of apple and pear with my usual hot chocolate.  My host mom knows me very well now.  She will always have my glass on the table just in case I want to drink the natural juice she always has prepared.  If I’m not full I will always take some.  They really are delicious.  Hoy era jugo de fresas.

We went to school with the intention of getting there really early.  We only got there early because Brian was running a little late.  Nonetheless, the plan was to take a taxi and so it was no problem getting one.  I had never noticed how much traffic there was until today.  Walking with the buds definitely keeps me distracted apparently.  Or it could be that I just wanna look away from the smoke coming out of all the damn vehicles.  Carrying a scarf around isn’t just good for just in case it rains, it’s also good to cover my nose and mouth.  I will take a vid and picture of the black smoke before I leave so that y’all can see.  I just keep forgetting to do it.

There were at least 5 new students today at the Academia.  One was from France, I believe two from England, one from Switzerland, and another from Maryland (U.S.).  Every Monday since I’ve been here the Academia has had new students, so every Monday they have to do orientation for the students.  I wonder if they were as excited as I was.  Today we started a new module.  For the next 5 weeks I will have advertising in the morning for two hours; also an hour of grammar and another of literature with Raquel.  We had no idea who our advertising teacher would be so I was excited to meet a new professor.  Well, we weren’t able to meet him today nor I think we will ever.  When we were waiting for him/her in class in the morning, a professor walked in and told us class was canceled because the professor had “complications” and apparently regarding the events that happened Thursday.  Then, later, Patty told us we weren’t going to be able to have him/her because the schedule wouldn’t allow it.  He could only teach in the PM, and we could only learn the subject in the AM.  In the meantime, Nacho (our previous marketing research professor) has volunteered to teach us this week or until they find someone suitable for us.  As Patty said, they don’t want to just find anyone to teach our class.  Since we didn’t have class we just went to Cyrano to get something warm to drink.  I got Yonseili and I pan de limón.  They’re good.  After that we went to a papeleria to get some stuff for Yonseili.  I got some portanotas (index cards) and they are not like the ones back home but they will do.

Christian and I headed back to school as Yonseili headed to Quicentro to get some more school supplies.  I let Carolina know that I am interesting in Gaby’s help for good offers for the Galapagos Islands.  Carolina and Gaby both work for the school and help students out with different things, including setting up activities or trips.  I am excited.

I was very happy to see Raquel.  She is seriously an awesome teacher.  Today we talked about generos, which is knowing what gender things are in Spanish (la mesa, el papel, la pluma, el microfono, etc.).  Although it’s not too exciting, it’s good to go back to the basics.  The first activity she did with us was record us answering some questions she had.  This is to listen to ourselves and our mistakes.  Raquel me dice que yo tengo que pulir (polish) mi Español.  At 12pm, Raquel from Virginia came in for the literatura part of the class.  We read over some Quichua that was translated into two versions, one version was by Juan Leon Mera.  He is a poet of Ecuador and wrote the national anthem for this country.  He also wrote a famous novela, Cumanda.  We talked about how beautiful literature is, and related to one of the many ways some people explained the beauty of life.

The plan after school was to play soccer at 2pm.  But since Yonseili’s class was changed from 4:30-6:30pm to 2-4pm we postponed.  Either way there were too little players to really make a game.  Hopefully tomorrow and/or Wednesday we can play and Yonseili can join because she will not have class on hump days.  For lunch Vincent, Julius, Brian, Chen (met up with us), and Yonseili and I went to…::thinking:: I need to find out the name of the place.  Then Yonseili had to leave soon to go to class.

BTW, men here don’t have too much respect for women.  They don’t care if they see you see them staring you up and down.  They have no problem wasting 10 minutes of their lives whistling at you.  They have no problem undressing you with their eyes even when you’re looking straight at them and they definitely don’t have a problem saying things that make you feel uncomfortable.  Of course, not all men are like that.  Just saying it happens more than often.  I mean, taxi drivers will go out of their way to look at women by swerving their head back and forth because the passenger seat is in the way… it’s sad.

Brian and I just walked home through the park, chilled for a while at our homes, and when Yonseili got home all 3 of us went to eat to a restaurant instead of going to get our books for literature class.  We figured we can go tomorrow because my host mom said the best one is near our school.  The book will have to wait.  After pre-dinner we all hung out at my house.  Brian needed to use my computer anyway.  Yonseili decorated her notebooks after she put book covers on her spiral notebooks.  Then we gave Juan Jose (my host bro) a pen that Yonseili made look like a wand and I decorated.  He liked it.

Brian left for dinner and Yonseili me acompaño for dinner with a cup of coffee along with my host mom.  Yonseili passed on dinner at her home.  It took me a while to finish my dinner because I was full already.  I didn’t want to be rude so I finished all my plate after a long time.  When my host dad got home we all conversed and had a good talk and good laughs.

After I finished my juice, we went upstairs and Yonseili got on Facebook since she finished her homework while I had dinner.  Our homework was cake so I didn’t take too long on mine.  Then we split and went our separate ways until tomorrow.  I do not look forward to waking up.  It’s kinda late now.

Peace and love to all, and to all a good night!

Highlight of the day:  My literature class.  I will enjoy this class very much. !Muchas gracias profesora Raquel!
